Dual Diagnosis Group
The Association formally announces its Dual Diagnosis Group, offered weekly on Tuesdays at 7 pm, at First Lutheran Church, located at 3600 W. Friendly Avenue.
The newest of the Association's support groups is a Dual Diagnosis group. Also known as co-occurring disorders, dual diagnosis refers to individuals dealing with mental health conditions as well as substance abuse.
Studies show that one of every two individuals with a severe mental illness has the additional problem of substance abuse disorder. It is common for individuals with a mental health disorder to attempt “self-medication,” using drugs and alcohol to dull the pain they feel caused by depression, anxiety, or any number of conditions.
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), within the general U.S. population, approximately 5.2 million people were considered dually-diagnosed in 2005. Among these individuals, only 8.5% received appropriate treatment, with 53% receiving no treatment at all.
Other Association support groups include two Depression and Bipolar groups, a group for Friends and Family, plus groups focused on Anxiety, Schizophrenia, and the Aftermath of losing a loved one to suicide. Three additional groups are held in Spanish.
