I-A: Finding a New Normal: Helping Bereaved Clients Reinvest in Life

Objective: To offer insights and clinical interventions to guide clients impacted by significant loss through a process of recovery and re-engagement. Session will draw on theories of grief and loss, as well as cognitive-behavioral, mindfulness, and positive psychology concepts.

I-B: Tools to Stop Bullying and Harassment of GLBT Youth: In School and Out

Objective: To explore methods of creating "safe spaces" for everyone, with special emphasis on GLBT adolescents, examine current laws and protective measures in place to prevent harassment, and discuss resources available to reduce bullying among adolescents.

II-A: Integrating Spirituality in the Treatment of Trauma: A Primer on Competent Practice

UNCG Department of Counseling and Educational Development
Objective: To explore the competencies for ethically integrating spirituality into the counseling process; to learn how to effectively and efficiently assess client spirituality, including implicit and explicit assessment; to learn how to assess spiritual development; and to learn how to integrate spirituality in treatment planning.

II-B: Turbulent Transition: Supporting Children and Teens Impacted by Traumatic
Katie Wangelin, MSW, LCSW Kids Path Support Services Team Manager
Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro
Objective: To provide an overview of developmental responses to loss, effective interventions to utilize with bereaved children and teens, and special considerations when working with survivors of traumatic loss. Session will explore common sources of traumatic grief, potential complications, and helpful techniques for moving clients forward in their process.

Session III: 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. (for all participants)

III: Panel Discussion: "Hurting People Hurt People"
Panel will include specialists from Family Service of the Piedmont, the Guilford Center, Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, NCCJ of the Piedmont Triad, and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Panel Objectives: To gain insight into the potential cycle of trauma and abuse, explore the effects of past trauma on present behaviors, and identify tools for therapeutic intervention.
